They say the creatures have been dying in the drought and want the killing halted

Animal charities are calling on the Government to halt this year’s badger cull which they fear could wipe out populations already struggling to survive in the dry summer. The organisations are warning that the six-week intensive cull period could lead to localised extinction in some areas of the Westcountry including Devon, where volunteers have already seen badgers dying from lack of water.

Jenny Pike, chair of the Devon Badger Group, said they are being called out to rescue badgers which have become badly dehydrated. She said cull figures for Devon last year showed fewer animals than expected, and the group now fear the animals could disappear from some areas due to the weather, the cull, and destruction of their homes and habitats.
